About SorianoSoriano nel Cimino, at 520 metres above sea level and with a population of 9,000 is a wonderful base for exploring things Italian. Located about 1 hour north of Rome, in the northern part of Lazio, between the Tyrrhenian sea and the Apennines, Soriano is 15 km from Viterbo and only 20 kms from Umbria. It is 48 kms from Orvieto. It is 15 kms from Orte (about 20 mins by bus or car), which is a major rail hub linking northern and southern Italy. Soriano is close to the A1 highway that runs from the north of Italy to the south.
The close proximity of Soriano to Viterbo, Orte and Orvieto and other wonderful towns and cities make it an ideal base for day trips, either by car or by bus and train. The position, on the Monte Cimino means that summer months are cooler than in Rome. In addition the proximity to public transport make it possible to traverse Lazio, Tuscia, Umbria, Tuscany, and Le Marche to visit such many marvelous places as Rome, Orvieto, Perugia, Siena and Florence, to name a few. Soriano nel cimino has a sense of community. It also offers many interesting walks within the town, and offers possibilities to wander around, to shop in Piazza Guielmo Marconi and Piazza Vittore Emanueleor go to one of the bars especially Bar Centrale and Bar Roma and eat at one of the restaurants. The three nearest restaurants are I Tre Scalini, Taverna dei Frati and I Due Camini. The town has a wide range of small shops, boutiques, a post office, banks, ATM’s, 2 Festivals There are a number of religious and historical events throughout the year and in summer, July and August there are special festivities that include theatre, musical entertainment and artistic and sporting events. A special event in Soriano is the chestnut festival (Sagra delle Castagne), which is held in during the first two weekends in October. Over 500 participants in medieval and renaissance costumes represent the four districts or contradas of the town (Papacqua, Rocca, San Giorgio, Trinita). The districts compete for honour and glory and display their skills in ring jousting, archery and flag waving. Festival events include re-enanctment of 15th and 16th century battles, investiture and duels of medieval knights, swordfights, the revelation of the secrets and torture chamber of the Orsini castle to name a few. Naturally, the symbol of the festival, chestnuts, are abundant. |
